Make your own family card game {mothers day gift idea}

Every year around this time, I try to think of an amazing mothers day gift idea for my mom and mother in law. And every year I come up short and end up giving them an oven mitt, some juice, or a gift card, which seems really thoughtless. So this year, I used all of my thinking power and came up with this cute little family card game that I personalized with our family photos.  (p.s.- I’m giving away the punch I used to make these cards at the bottom of this post!)

 It was simple to make, and my kids even got to help me make it for their grandma, which she is going to love!

 This is a simple matching game, which is perfect for younger kids (or grandmas!) The deck of cards is full of  2 of each photo. So you can play it like go-fish…

 You could play it as a memory game, where you have to remember where your cards are and match them together.

Or you could even play it like “old maid”. Just pick one person in the family to be the old maid (choose wisely) and only put one of their photos in the deck of cards. Then if you get them in your deck of cards, you’ve got the “old maid”.

 This project is really simple, and can be made quickly during naptime or even with the kids’ help.

You’ll need:

Family Photos (2 of each picture)
Cardstock
Glue (I like the sticky thumb)
3×4 card punch

Instructions:

Start by punching your photos with the 3×4 punch. You’ll also need to punch a piece of cardstock for the back of each photo.

 Simply take your photos and stick them right onto the cardstock backs.

Then you can decorate the back of your cards. I used some washi tape. You could also use stamps or stickers. Just make sure the backs all look the same, cause you don’t want anyone cheating and remembering which card is which.

You could also print a family logo on the back before you punch it. Your mom might love you more for it. 🙂

 And that’s it! You could laminate the cards if you are worried about them lasting. One they are laminated, just stick them back in the punch, and they’ll all be uniform in size.

 Besides a mothers day gift idea, you could use this idea for a bunch of things! I’m thinking about making flash cards for my kids, to make a banner to hang in their room, or just as an activity to keep my kids busy. Trust me, they’ll love to see their face on a matching game!
