How to Make a Rustic Farmhouse Style Sign (Peace Be Unto Thy Soul) #princeofpeace

I am in love with Rustic Farmhouse signs. I’ve made similar things before, like my shiplap wreath display and my pallet art, but I’ve never really tried making my own and writing a quote on it. The reason is that I couldn’t find a quote that really spoke to me enough that I wanted it displayed in my home for years to come. Until I came across this scripture. I knew I wanted this written and displayed in my home.

Watch this video to see how I made my sign, step by step.

Being a mom of 4 young kids, my heart is always full of worry. I worry they’re getting too much screentime, that I’m yelling too much, that I don’t feed them enough “organic” foods. I worry that they’re not getting enough sleep, that they don’t brush their teeth good enough, or their rooms are too messy. I worry what they’re learning at school, I worry that they are growing up in a world full of violence and hate, and I worry that I’m not teaching them good enough. The list goes on and on into serious things that truly keep me up at night. I worry about SO many things… I just WORRY about my kids and my family.

One day I came across this scripture from D&C 121:7-8. It says, “My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes.”

When I read this scripture, it was as if God himself had wrapped his compassionate arms around me and covered me with reassurance, hope, and peace. Peace be unto thy soul! Oh, how I want peace! How I want to stop the worries. I want to trust in God, this scripture helps me to feel PEACE! I knew I needed to put this up in my home, because every time I glance over at it, I feel a tug at my heart that God is aware of me. And I know that peace can come by trusting in the Prince of PEACE, my Savior.

I found that thought of the Prince of Peace, bringing PEACE to my soul, very fitting for the Easter season. I love the gift of the resurrection, because it is a great reminder that we can have PEACE in our hearts and in our homes.

This Easter, I invite you to participate in the #PrinceOfPeace initiative. I promise that this initiative will help us, and those around us, feel of the Savior’s peace. On March 31, watch this video at mormon.org/easter. Then, each day during Holy Week, from Palm Sunday (April 9) until Easter Sunday (April 16), one of 8 principles will be presented on mormon.org with a scripture, a short video of individuals who have found peace from practicing this principle, and a few suggestions on ways we might live this principle.

This sign would be a perfect project to coordinate with the theme for April 10th – Compassion. These are some suggestions for things you can do for compassion. Or, if none of these work for you, think of your own!

  • Watch the Mormon Messages video “Lift: The Power of Service.”
  • Think of someone you love. Make a list of their good traits and give it to them.
  • Write a letter to someone who has recently experienced a loss or could use a pick-me-up. You could also make this sign as a gift for them, if you feel prompted to.
  • Make this sign to keep in your home as a reminder of our Savior’s compassion to you, and his role as Prince of Peace.

How to Make a Rustic Farmhouse Style Sign:

  1. Cut wood pieces. For this size, you’ll need:
    • 3- 1×4’s (12″ long)
    • 2- 1×2’s (10 1/2″ long)
    • 2- 1×2’s (13 3/8″ long)
  2. Stain the 1×2’s and paint the 1×4’s.
  3. Use wood glue and brad nailer to attach the 1×2’s as a frame around the 1×4’s.
  4. Print out the free printable download here ->  Peace-be-unto-thy-soul-print.jpg
  5. Rub the side of a pencil over the backside of the download. This will help to transfer the image on to the wood.
  6. Tape your paper to your wood where you want the image to be. Use a pen and trace on the front side of the image.
  7. Remove the paper from the wood. You should have a pencil sketching of the image.
  8. Use a sharpie and trace over the image. You could also use paint, if you’d rather.
  9. Enjoy!
