How to Make a SHIPLAP Wreath Display

Last week I announced that I had partnered with The Home Depot on their DIH Workshop for a DIY Ornament Display, and today I get to show you what I made! I actually ended up making my ornament display into a shiplap wreath display. That’s right, folks, I said SHIPLAP! Chip and Jo would be so proud!

These workshops are really cool because you can take the ideas you see on my blog (and 25 others, which are linked at the end of this post) and go into your local Home Depot and get the project done- they provide all the tools and supplies, so if you aren’t sure how to use the tools, but would like to learn, this is the perfect project for you! (Don’t forget you need to register for the DIH Workshop if you want to attend. This workshop is on November 17th at 6:30, and space is limited, so make sure to register quick.)

I’m familiar with this type of project because I’ve made a few different pallet signs, like my Choose Happy sign and my Halloween Pallet Sign. We can’t forget my deer head sign too (which is PERFECT for Christmas)! So I knew I was going to love doing this project! I took the basic idea from The Home Depot, which was a planked, sort of pallet look background, except I framed mine to make it look a little more charming and rustic. I also wanted to go for more of a shiplap look, than the Home Depot’s example. I love shiplap, but I’m too scared to commit to an entire wall, so this was a good compromise for me. I ended up using skinnier boards than the Home Depot’s example, to achieve the shiplap look.

Then I did an ornament wreath instead of gluing on ornaments in the shape of a tree. This way, I can switch out my wreaths for different seasons or occasions. I am planning on keeping it up all year long and just switching out the wreath for each different holiday or season. Can you believe BOTH of these wreaths are from The Home Depot- who’d have guessed!

These cute ceramic reindeer are also from The Home Depot. Yeah, I give these guys two thumbs up and a bunch of heart eyes… SO classic and SO charming!

I absolutely LOVE the way my shiplap wreath display turned out. Here’s how I made it.

Supplies Needed:

5- 8 foot 1×3’s
2- 8 foot 1×2’s
Paint
Stain
Length of wire for hanging
Brad Nailer or Stapler
Wood Glue
Miter Saw
Eye and Hearing protection
1- Nail or Screw

Instructions:

Start by deciding what size of display you want. Mine is pretty big, about 32″ x 32″. I thought this size would be good for my 20″ ornament wreath. Adjust my dimensions if you want to change your size.

Once you know what size you want, start cutting your 1×3’s. If you’re doing the same size as me, cut your boards 30 inches long. You will need 12. You’ll also need 2- 29″ boards for the back. So 14 boards all together. Try to keep your cuts as uniform as possible. The more similar in length your boards are, the better. 

Lay your 30″ boards out so you know how they’ll look all put together. I like the different knots and variation in wood grains, so I made sure to keep those sides up on my boards. Also make sure you notice if any boards are too long or too short for the other boards, and fix them before everything is put together. You want them all pretty square and uniform.

Turn your boards all over, line up the edges, and staple or brad nail the shorter (29 inch) pieces onto the back. This will keep your pallet sign together

Then attach your hanging wire. I used my stapler to attach mine.

Once your sign is all put together, give it a good sand before you stain or paint it. Also make sure to sand the edges so they are straight, square, and uniform.

Then go on to paint or stain. I used DecoArt’s Chalky Finish paint, which you can find at The Home Depot. I love this paint!

You could be done here, but I wanted to add a frame to the edges of my shiplap sign, just to finish it off. You’ll need 4 1×4 pieces for the frame. Just measure your sign, and cut your wood to size- you’ll need 2 boards about 30 inches, for the sides, and then 2 boards about 31 1/2″ for the top and bottom- but please measure your piece first to get exact measurements. Give your boards a coat of paint or stain, and attach it to the edges with wood glue and brad nails. Make sure your 1×2’s are flush with the back of your sign when you nail them on.

Then just add a nail or screw into your sign wherever you want to hang your wreath, and you’re all finished! Oh, and don’t you love my farmhouse desk! SO charming with this shiplap wreath display!
