DIY Painted Metal Earrings {tutorial}

It’s taken me a while to be fond of large earrings. Not because I don’t like the look of them- I really do like how they look- but mostly because, as a child, I remember seeing little old women with GIANT earrings, and thinking their ears would be torn to pieces… you know those women, right? So it took me a while to try wearing large earrings, because I didn’t want to be one of those saggy-eared women.

So, you can imagine how thrilled I was to when I made these earrings that weigh basically nothing! And, you can make them yourself too! Introducing (da-da-da-daaaah) the DIY Painted Metal Earrings. (A big thanks to Kimbo for the inspiration!)

These are incredibly comfortable to wear because they are SO lightweight. You can paint them any color you want (I’m thinking I need one for each outfit). And, at less than a dollar a pair- that’s right, I said a DOLLAR per pair!!!!- you can’t go wrong with these bad boys. I use any excuse I can get to give these away, because people either think I spent a LOT of money at the boutique to buy these… or that I am a genius (which I am- ha!) for making them myself.

 You’ll need:

Filigrees (I found mine here)
Kidney ear wires (also here)
Paint
Spray sealer

 Instructions:

1. Start by painting your filigrees. I rolled out a big piece of butcher paper and went to town using regular craft paint and a foam brush. But I’m thinking if you want a bunch of the same color, I would TOTALLY spray paint them. (the filigrees start out as antiqued bronze (see bottom left of photo above), so you could just leave them how they are and skip the painting all together.

2. After you’ve got them the color you want them, lay them all out flat and spray them with a spray sealer. I used Krylon’s crystal clear in satin.

3. Let them dry for a while, and then stick the kidney wires in and you’re done.

I cut out some little earring cards with my electronic craft cutter. Then went around the edges with a sweetheart inker (remember to use code CREATIVEMOM to get 20% off any purchase from We R Memory Keepers).

 Then I just stuck the earrings inside. I love that you can have any color of earring you want, simply by using craft paint.

 And that’s it. These earrings are not only super adorable, lightweight, and super comfortable to wear… they also make PERFECT gifts. Or, these DIY painted metal earrings would be the perfect project if you’ve got a girls night, craft night, or girls camp coming up.
