Painted Egg Sign with Silhouette {Tutorial}

I am really excited for Easter. I know, I’m skipping over St Patrick’s Day. Don’t worry, we will celebrate the lucky day, {see how we do it- HERE}.

But since Easter is so early this year, I wanted to pull out my cute Spring and Easter decorations before it’s too late.

If you follow me on Facebook, you may know that I just got my brand new Silhouette Cameo!!! (insert fist pump here) I am so excited about it, that I thought I’d try it out and make a something new to add to our Easter decorations. But I didn’t want it to be too cheesy or too pastel… like every other Easter decoration I own. And this is what I came up with today.

 

This has to be one of my favorite decorations I’ve ever made. You see, we live in the country, and we actually have a few chickens…

And a turquoise barn. I get a lot of grief about it.

My 5 year old son is in charge of taking care of the chickens, and we’ve affectionately named him the “Egg Farmer”. He’s even asked if he could sell the eggs to make some money.

He’s really good about taking care of them everyday, and having chickens (and goats) is one of our favorite things. So, when I thought this little idea up in my head, I knew it would be perfect for our little family.

Here’s how I made mine.

I had this wooden tray laying around (Mine came from the thrift store. Remember it here?) It had been spray painted white long ago.

If you don’t have a wooden tray, you can use a piece of wood, or a cabinet door, or any flat-ish thing you have laying around.

I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out the vinyl I used. It was SO SIMPLE!!! I have seriously fallen in love with my Cameo and I wish I’d have made the switch from my Cricut a long time ago!

I found an image of a chicken I liked from the Silhouette store. It was 99 cents, but my Cameo came with a ten dollar gift card to the Silhouette store, so it really didn’t cost me anything! One of my favorite things about my Cameo is that you don’t have to buy cartridges or anything. You can use any image you design yourself or even one you find online. A lot of designers share their cut files for free, so just search around, and you might be able to find something you love for free!

 

 I just added some text with the chicken image.

 

And cut it out on vinyl.

 

Then I stuck the vinyl onto my tray. I actually spray painted just the face of the tray grey because I’m going to peel this vinyl off eventually, and I wanted the text to stay grey.

Then I spray painted on top of my vinyl. So the entire tray was white again.

Once the spray paint was mostly dry, I peeled off the vinyl. That’s actually a big fat lie, I didn’t let the paint dry at all. But I should have, because I smudged the paint a lot. But it added to the “rustic” look I was going for, so it turned out fine.

And to finish it up, I roughed it up a little so it didn’t look so pristine. Just use a little sand paper and make it look like it’s been living on the farm for years.

PS. Casey hates when I do this. He thinks it’s a silly thing to try to make things look old or “crappy” as he calls it. haha

You can spray it with some sealer if you’d like.

And you’re done. Pretty simple.

I love this sitting in my dining room. It’s a cute Easter decoration that could stay up all year long… and I just might let it!
